Treatment Modalities
"I use individualized and evidence-based approaches to mental health and substance abuse treatment noting that no one type of treatment is appropriate and effective for all types of problems. Using “what works best” allows you and I to choose the type of treatment that is compatible for your unique set of concerns. Some approaches may include family members and significant others."
I might suggest group therapy, family counseling, as well as individual sessions. Some of my approaches might be cognitive-behavioral or solution-focused while the other approaches are focused on personal growth. I sometimes use “homework assignments” or selected reading assignments to underscore the focus of treatment. Medications are sometimes considered in the course of treatment. If a referral for medication is necessary, you may consult with a psychiatrist, physician or Nurse Practitioner of your choosing. I will make referral recommendations as needed and requested. School-based counseling is generally limited to individual counseling, play therapy of crisis intervention with family sessions added as needed according to family availability. It is my practice to ask that parents be involved to the degree possible in their son’s treatment. Telephone sessions as well as face-to-face sessions can be scheduled."
Course of Treatment
"Progress in treatment is often quite difficult to define. As a treatment provider, I first attempt to set goals for treatment and to reduce symptoms. You will be asked to participate in developing a plan to deal with stressors/concerns more effectively. The length of time spent in treatment is dependent on the severity of the problem and the willingness to address the issues and make the necessary changes. It is critical to have honest and open dialogue with your therapist. Positive change is often difficult and can seem frightening. Real change takes time and effort."
